Healthy dining at Hanaya Advocate 17 Mar 2010
It’s a great feeling to leave a restaurant feeling healthier than when you arrived.
This has always been my experience at Hanaya Japanese restaurant in Hornsby, because the food is so low in fat, features freshly picked ingredients and brims with antioxidents....more
It’s no secret that many persons who adopt an Asian diet live to a ripe old age and I’m sure if I could dine at Hanaya each day I’d be bursting with essential vitamins and minerals.
We stopped by for a quick lunch last week and I vowed to return for a leisurely dinner.
We started our meal with a serve of pork dumplings with pickled ginger.
The dumplings were brilliant. They were deep fried, but there wasn’t a drop of oil on them. We enjoyed dipping them in soy and chilli sauce as we looked forward to our steak set to follow.
When the steak set arrived it was a colourful array of dishes large enough to share or just right if you skipped an entree.
It included sauteed steak, which simply melted in the mouth; a salad; five different pieces of sushi; a selection of sashimi; miso soup; and icecream.
The selection of food was beautifully presented on the plates and made for an interesting meal, with varying textures and flavours.
The menu here is priced so that you can enjoy lunch without breaking the budget.
At dinner, you can choose to order a wider range of courses or larger servings.
Thursday and Friday nights are popular, so bookings are essential.
The BYO restaurant, which is tucked away on the Pacific Hwy at Hornsby, also does takeaway.
Japcuisine Fanatic - Eatbility Review 13 October 2009
The exquisite food of Hanaya, one of the main standouts was the Teriyaki Chicken, placed so elegantly on the plate. The sauce was not overwhelming and probably one of the best teriyaki chicken in S, as it was dominant which was delicious.

HANA-YA Restaurant has quickly established an outstanding reputation for serving authentic and delicious Japanese cuisine. The restaurant’s unassuming frontage on the Pacific Highway at Hornsby means you could stroll right past it without noticing. A shame, because with food this good, Hana-ya should be lit up in lights....more
We arrived for lunch and were treated to the latest additions to an already superb menu. First, an entrée of steamed egg, which we were told is a popular Japanese dish not often served in Australia. The egg is of custard-like consistency with a salty edge. Next, there was a fried udon dish served in a delicious broth. The udon noodles are hearty and thick but, coupled with such a light broth, this dish leves us satisfied but not bogged down.
My companion and I both then sampled two new soup options.
The sho-yu ramen and the sho-yu miso are light and absolutely delicious lunchtime meals. Ingredients are fresh and these soups are shining examples of Japanese cuisine. The last dish we were introduced to was the donkatsu.
Donkatsu is a schnitzel-esque pork dish served with sauce and a wonderfully fresh salad on the side.
Our trip to Hana-ya opened our eyes to Japanese cuisine beyond the teriyaki, sushi and sashimi we have so come to love. Hana-ya does it all well and is a must-visit for Japanese food enthusiasts.

Try this Hidden Gem
Tucked away beneath a large apartment complex lies one of Hornsby’s better restaurants.
The Japanese restaurant’s discreet location means there’s not much passing traffic, but talk of its quality food has obviously spread because there’s no shortage of customers.
On Friday night the restaurant, which also does takeaway, was buzzing with a mix of Asian and European clientele...more
We started with a serve of the restaurant’s popular seaweed salad, which was a refreshing mix of lettuces with seaweed woven among the leaves.
We enjoyed this with thin slices of beef tataki, which was very moist and tasty, and a delicious bowl of agedashi tofu.
Fried and piping hot, the tofu was ideally textured on the outside and melt-in-the –mouth soft on the inside.
For mains was had teriyaki chicken, mixed tempura and a sashimi set.
The chicken was aromatically spiced, the tempura batter perfectly cooked and the sashimi fresh and light.
It was a feast.
Anyone seeking value for money combined with quality food should seek out this hidden gem.
Flavours to impress by Advocate / October 9, 2008
HANAYA Japanese Restaurant may be hard to find, tucked away as it is beside the discount Chemist on Pacific High Way, but once you eat in this place, you will find yourself coming back to it again and again.
Sushi is just the start of their varied menu, with such favorites as beef tataki, soft shell crab roll and eel donburi being a big favorite with the mainly Aussie and Asian clientele...more
We were first offered a sashimi set which was stunningly presented. This sushi mix of salmon, tuna, kingfish and snapper with inside out rolls filled with salmon, avocado, rice and eggfish was mouth-wateringly good.
Delicately garnished with shredded radish, parsley wasabi, ginger and, of course, soy sauce, the result was an explosion of flavours that instantly outshone any other sushi this reviewer has tasted.
Behind this stunning concoction is Japanese food and sushi chef of over 15 years standing, Hiroshi Nakamura. His resume is impressive: he has coached at Tokyo Sushi Academy, served up sushi to countless Japanese celebrities and had glowing reviews in British newspapers. Despite his impressive background, Hiroshi is unassuming and welcoming, while his staff are exceptionally pleasant. Up next is a teriyaki chicken platter. Cooked in a homemade sauce with ingredients such as soy sauce and sugar, the chicken is tender and delicious.
A platter of tempura then appears. This dish of delicately deep-fried prawns and vegetables, including carrots, onions, zucchini, beans and asparagus, actually melts in the mouth.
A bowl of green tea ice-cream completes the incredibly satisfying meal...more
Once you have found this snug little restaurant, you may never look elsewhere for your Japanese food. But beware: the restaurant fills up quickly on weekends, so make sure to book ahead.
